Lewis ventured ahead of the party, on foot, finally reaching the first of the five Great Falls of the Missouri. It was clear that the Corps would have to portage overland and return to the Missouri River above the falls.

Fun Fact - While exploring around the Great Falls and looking for a portage route, Lewis occasionally heard a “boom” to the northwest of the river. He assumed it was thunder, but then he heard the sound on a clear day. To Lewis it sounded like a large cannon firing, but there were no cannons in the area. The phenomenon of this “boom” continues today - locals also claim to have heard this unexplained noise.

The 18-mile portage around the five falls on the upper Missouri took the Corps 31 days. The route was scouted in advance, and the captains determined that the Corps would need to cache supplies and food near the lower falls to pick up on their return trip the following year.

Fun Fact - To cache goods, the Corps dug a 6-by-8-foot “cellar” in the ground, filling it with dry goods and sealing off the top with dirt, turf, and ash. Some of the goods cached at the lower falls site included pork, flour, corn, salt, gunpowder, lead, and 2 muskets.

Adam Brooks align= Adam has been involved in several Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation chapters, recently serving on the board of the Gates of the Mountains chapter. When in Helena, he can be found hanging out at Farcountry Press, standing waist-deep fly-fishing in a river, or visiting his friend Will. Adam splits his time between Montana and another state which Lewis & Clark did not visit. He has a degree in American History.
align= Illustrator Ted Rechlin has been drawing pictures and telling stories since he was three years old. While his drawings have gotten much better, his stories haven't really changed much. They're still about superheroes, bears, wolves, sharks, monsters, and lots of dinosaurs. Ted feels very fortunate to live a life where he now gets paid to draw his pictures and tell his stories. He has contributed his work to many museums, zoos, and publishing companies like DC Comics and Dover Publications. With four of his own educational children's books and previous two coloring books available from Farcountry Press, Ted is excited about his newest release, the epic history of the Lewis and Clark Coloring Book.
