align= Joel W. Rogers is a quintessential Seattleite. Born and raised in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, he is the proud son of a ship captain and grandson of Swedish immigrants. He has sampled all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer, including time as a timber cruiser, tugboat sailor, and halibut fisherman. These experiences were the seeds of his writing and photography, which have been his passion for 28 years. In return, his freelance success has given him a seasoned perspective on this vibrant, ever-changing city.

Joel is the author and photographer of award-winning books and articles covering adventure travel, outdoor sports, world trade, and environmental concerns in the Pacific Northwest. He has worked with Canoe & Kayak, Hemispheres, Islands, Men's Journal, Outside, Seattle Metropolitan, Sunset, Alaska Airlines, the National Geographic Society, The Nature Conservancy, Graphic Arts Books, Houghton Mifflin, Sasquatch Books, and W.W. Norton.
