NEVADA’S ALPHIE SELECTED FOR LIMITED
EDITION CHILDREN’S BOOK MASCOT SERIES

Alphie’s on the Loose in New Book, Looking for Lost Game-Day Basketball around Reno, UNR

Everyone’s favorite University of Nevada mascot, Alphie, leads children on an action-packed adventure around Reno in search of the lost game-day basketball in a new children’s book by authors Chris and Jennifer Newbold. In The Wild Wolf Pack Mystery, Alphie visits all of Northern Nevada’s most beloved landmarks—including Peavine Mountain, Tahoe, the Quad on the UNR campus, and the Truckee River Water Park—to solve the mystery of the missing game-day basketball.

“The best part of this book is how the illustrations bring Alphie to life,” say authors Chris and Jennifer Newbold. “Children undoubtedly will feel like they are experiencing Alphie’s adventure right alongside him,” added the Newbolds.

The book idea arose after Jennifer Newbold authored The Great Monte Mystery in 2008, a book about the mascot of her alma mater, the University of Montana. Jennifer’s husband, Chris, then authored a children’s book about his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Wild Wolf Pack Mystery is the third book in their mascot book series, and the Newbolds dedicate it to the passionate and loyal fans of the Nevada Wolf Pack.

“With so many universities and mascots to write about, we try to be somewhat selective in picking a campus where fan pride runs deep and there is a definite affinity for the mascot. We felt the University of Nevada–Reno was a great fit,” said Jennifer Newbold. “The Wild Wolf Pack Mystery represents the admiration we have for Nevada, the uniqueness of Alphie, and the spirit of the Reno community. That is a very important aspect of the book—the sense of place and pride it instills in the children who live in the community. It was a ton of fun to produce, and we think the book will be something the children of Wolf Pack fans will enjoy reading time and time again.”

The Wild Wolf Pack Mystery appeals to children of all ages but is primarily targeted to toddlers through age 8. Fun Nevada facts (“Alphie Says”) are peppered throughout the story. Nostalgic UNR alumni will love revisiting the well-known campus and northern Nevada landmarks, fans of UNR athletics will be delighted by the Wolf Pack basketball-centered story, and kids everywhere will appreciate the lesson Alphie learns about honesty.
